There is an old joke about common sense not being very common. Having watched the United States Congress drop the ball on SOPA and is related legislation PIPA has me revising my thoughts on the old joke. Assuming nothing nefarious in thinking of the bill’s sponsors, the next logical question would be: what were they thinking?

It occurs to me a rational explanation would be many lawmakers in and outside the United States simply do not know how technology works, in particular the Internet. So when lobbyists come to them and say the functional equivalent of: ‘Houston, we have a problem.’, they go about attempting to craft legislation while being clueless about how things work.

The United States is not alone in this. Countries across the pond, such as the Netherlands face the same issue. This is nothing to do with other countries such as Iran, North Korea or Syria and China. Their attempts to curtail an open web are more about total governance in general.

While the geeks among us know how to circumvent censorship it does not help the less technically aware.

In the Netherlands there is a web hosting company known as Greenhost. They have just released a nice little piece of can software (a plug-in) for WordPress sites. This is not insignificant because the platform is used by tens of millions of websites, or in percentage, about 15% of all web traffic.

The plug-in is known as RePress. It is quite clever in its design. If a site is being censored RePress it simply provides redirection information. Please do understand the software does not require a WordPress based website to have a copy of the blocked site. It simply carries redirection information.

If this software catches on, and based on the strong response to SOPA, I have every reason to believe it will, web censorship as we know it will come to an end, without any hassle from the end-user’s viewpoint or effort by the hosting company or webmaster, beyond installing the plug-in.

Greenhost is careful to point out the software is brand-new ergo not fully tested. If you’re going to experiment with this early version concept, be sure to backup your site first.
